14/01: Dell Gaming Note Book

Dell's most powerful gaming notebook, the XPS 1730 features SLI graphics capability and in addition, there is Ageia PhysX as well. It features a 17-inch widescreen, HDD RAID capability, full-sized keyboard with numpad, LCD game panel and of course, being bigger than life. Pictured here is the special World of Warcraft Edition of the XPS 1730. Watch for our review!

Ever wondered how to actually make use of all that graphics horsepower you have with your spanking new dual/triple/quadruple SLI system you have running? Alienware has the answer with this prototype curved widescreen display, which is essentially the size of two 24-inch widescreen monitors with a natural curved view. This baby is actually running on DLP projection and was running a Crysis demo at max resolution.

14/01: All new in A-DATA

A-DATA showing off updated solid state technologies in the form of lager 128GB 2.5-inch SSD SATA RAID storage. There is also a move towards the 1.8-inch drive market and SSD companies have begun moving in with larger drives. A-DATA's sample at CES came up to 32GB.

Besides the usual desktop SATA SSD models, high capacity solid state storage has been seen moving into other form factors. Here, we see 16GB ExpressCard SSD. All three models seen here seem to be identical specification-wise, though interestingly enough, the E704 comes with a USB dongle for connection.
CF cards are also getting capacity bumps, up from 16GB to 32GB on a single card.
This isn't a USB flash drive, but a eSATA one instead. A-DATA probably thought it would be interesting to debut a high-capacity (32GB) thumb drive that connects via speedy eSATA. However, if you look at the image properly, you'd notice that the drive itself comes with a split-cable dongle that has a USB connection on it. It would seem while the device looks like a normal thumb drive, it would require both eSATA and USB to make it work. Hopefully, this is just a prototype design oversight.
Not exactly the latest kid on the block, but still hard to beat. A-DATA recently upped the ante with a 2000MHz DDR3 memory module. These things run on 9-9-9-24 timings and super high 2.05-2.15 Volts.

14/01: Vaulter (8G, 12GB, 16GB) PCIe module

SSD capacities are too small and expensive, Windows ReadyBoost has too many variables and limited to Windows Vista, Intel's Turbo Memory didn't really work and now SanDisk is taking their shot at boosting HDD storage performance with their new Vaulter (8G, 12GB, 16GB) PCIe module. The theory is still the same, an external flash storage that sits between the system and HDD to act as cache. However, unlike Turbo Memory and ReadyBoost, Vaulter isn't just another cache, it tries to optimize data access between itself and the HDD - certain data types are stored on the Vaulter directly, while others are moved to the HDD. This way, you get to see SSD-like performance immediately without losing the huge capacities of traditional HDDs. One thing's for sure is that we can't wait to try this new gadget to see if it can offer notable improvements.

13/01: Apacer Launches 4GB DDR2-800MHz Memory Modules

Apacer Technology has launched a new 4GB (2GBx2) DDR2-800MHz dual-channel memory module pack for desktop PCs. This high-end memory module has a single-stick memory capacity of 2GB; the dual-channel pack ensures high stability for dual-channel operation while providing the high performance and high memory capacity that gamers need.

The Apacer 4GB DDR2-800 memory module conforms to the JEDEC standard, and uses 1GB (128Mb x 8) pin architecture, with cutting-edge 70nm process technology and FBGA chip packaging. It provides high frequency and low power consumption by comparison with memory modules produced using older production process technology. Maximum bandwidth is 12.8GB per second (in dual-channel mode); the working voltage is just 1.8V.

Apacer's 4GB (2GB*2) DDR2-800MHz desktop PC memory module pack is ideally suited for use with memory-intensive game software where memory capacity can have a major impact on how smoothly the game plays. Most game software today requires a lot of memory. If memory capacity is insufficient, the hard drive provides "virtual memory" for the game; however, hard drive read speed is far lower than memory read speed, so as soon as the PC switches over to using the hard drive to provide virtual memory, the gamer notices a pronounced slowdown in the game. Increasing memory capacity is thus the key to improving game performance.

In developing the dual-channel architecture for its new 4GB (2GB*2) DDR2-800MHz memory module, Apacer has insisted on using memory chips with the same specification from the same supplier, and from the same batch, for both modules. Chip packaging is preceded by rigorous dual-channel environment testing. At every stage from die selection through production and testing right through to packaging, great care is taken to ensure that the memory module will provide the best possible performance and stability in a dual-channel environment.

10/01: Nvidia Pioneers Hybrid Technology for The PC

Nvidia announces the industry's first hybrid technology for PC platforms - Hybrid SLI - that addresses two critical issues: increasing graphics performance and reducing power consumption. NVIDIA Hybrid SLI technology will be incorporated into a wide variety of graphics and motherboard desktop and notebook products that the Company is rolling out for both AMD and Intel desktop and notebook computing platforms throughout 2008.

“From the introduction of programmable GPUs to the rapid adoption of our multi-GPU SLI technology, NVIDIA has repeatedly pioneered and innovated to solve difficult problems for the industry. We believe Hybrid SLI technology is one of the most important innovations we’ve come up with to date,” said Jen- Hsun Huang, CEO of NVIDIA. “Hybrid SLI delivers new multi-GPU technology to a large segment of the PC market, delivering consumers a level of PC graphics performance and power efficiency never before seen.”

First disclosed in June 2007, NVIDIA Hybrid SLI technology is based on the Company’s market-leading GeForce graphics processor units (GPUs) and SLI multi-GPU technology. Hybrid SLI enables NVIDIA motherboard GPUs (mGPUs) to work cooperatively with discrete NVIDIA GPUs (dGPUs) when paired in the same PC platform. Hybrid SLI provides two new technologies — GeForce Boost and HybridPower — that allow the PC to deliver graphics performance for today’s applications and games when 3D graphics horsepower is required, or transition to a lower-powered operating state when not. For lower energy consumption and quieter PC operation, HybridPower allows the PC to switch processing from a single GPU or multiple GPUs in SLI configuration to the onboard motherboard GPU.

HybridPower is most useful in situations where graphics horsepower is not required, such as high definition movie playback on a notebook platform or simple e-mail or Internet browsing on a desktop. It is also beneficial for those users who want a quiet operating state with reduced thermals and noise. For notebooks, HybridPower can also dramatically extend battery life by up to 3 hours.

When a game or application is started that requires the additional 3D horsepower, the PC can automatically transition back to the discrete graphics cards and power up the 3D capabilities all transparent to the end user. For applications where 3D performance is required, GeForce Boost turbo-charges 3D operation by combining the processing power of the traditional NVIDIA GeForce-based graphics card with that of the second GPU integrated into the motherboard core logic. In media-rich applications, both GPUs work in tandem to render the combined images with the end user benefiting from the increase in performance and frame rate. For typical games and 3D applications, GeForce Boost can kick in automatically, resulting in a greatly enhanced consumer experience.

NVIDIA is the recognised market leader for GPU desktop and notebook solutions for both Intel and AMD platforms and has a full lineup of Hybrid SLI-capable graphics and motherboard products planned for 2008. New Hybrid SLI-capable products include the upcoming NVIDIA nForce 780a SLI, nForce 750a SLI, and nForce 730a media and communication processors (MCPs) for AMD CPUs, which will be released next month, as well as the new GeForce 8200 — the industry’s first micro-ATX motherboard solution with an onboard Microsoft DirectX 10-compliant motherboard GPU. NVIDIA Hybrid SLI notebooks as well as desktop products designed for Intel CPUs will be available next quarter.
