Foxconn to Display Quantum Force Destroyer at CeBIT


Foxconn is going to display their Quantum Force "Destroyer" Hybrid SLI board based on the MCP72 chipset over at the upcoming CeBIT. MCP72XE supports AMD AM2/AM2+ processors, PCI-E 2.0, HT 3.0, Hybrid SLI technology, a total of 19 PCI--E lanes and another 32 lanes from nForce 200 PCIe switch chip, SATA 3.0 Gbit/s and 12x USB 2.0 ports. Expect more after CeBIT starts on March 4th.

SingTel and Partners to Build New Submarine Cable

High-bandwidth cable system to support traffic between Asia and US

Singapore Telecommunications Limited (SingTel) and five other international telecommunications carriers have signed an agreement to construct a new ultra high-speed submarine cable system linking the United States to Japan.

The other carriers involved in the project include Bharti Airtel, Global Transit, Google, KDDI Corporation and Pacnet.

The US$300 million cable system, named Unity, will span 10,000 km across the Pacific Ocean, linking Chikura in Japan directly to Los Angeles in the United States. It is expected to be ready for service in the first quarter of 2010.

Using state-of-the-art Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology, it will support up to 960 Gbits per second per fibre-optic pair with a maximum of eight fibre pairs. By having a higher fibre count, it is able to offer more capacity at lower unit costs. Unity will have a potential design capacity of 7.68 Tbits per second, making it one of the highest capacity cables of its kind. This data rate is equivalent to more than seven million Internet users simultaneously having real-time access to a 1 Mb file.

Mr Mark Chong, SingTel's Executive Vice President for Networks, said: "This new submarine cable network, with its high capacity and resilient transmission infrastructure, will be able to meet the strong demand for data, e-commerce and Internet traffic between Asia and the United States."

"As it is connected to other cable systems in Asia, it will also provide access to other parts of the region and serve as an important cable diversity route. The Unity submarine cable network will help to further strengthen SingTel's position as Asia's leading communications company," he added.

NEC Corporation and Tyco Telecommunications have been jointly awarded the contract to implement this project.

Toshiba Launches New 1.8-inch SATA Drives

Toshiba Corporation today announced new 1.8-inch hard disk drives (HDD) that integrate a performance enhancing serial ATA interface: the MK1216GSG offers a storage capacity of 120GB, while the MK8016GSG has a capacity of 80GB. Mass production of both drives will start in April.



Toshiba is committed to bringing the highest levels of performance to mobile PCs, and the new drives achieve this goal. These are the first Toshiba 1.8-inch HDD to employ a serial ATA interface, which boosts data transfer rates beyond those achieved by the parallel ATA interface, and also offer a rotation speed of 5,400 rpm, 29% faster than the current generation of Toshiba HDD. Higher rotation speeds support faster data access in reading and writing and enhance overall drive performance.

Alongside high speed data transfer, the new drives offer compact size, high level vibration resistance, and excellent shock resistance. They will support development of light, compact PCs with no compromises in performance. They will also contribute to achievement of environmentally conscious products, thanks to near silent operation and low energy consumption, and full compliance with the EU RoHS directive.

Toshiba will showcase the new drives at Intel Mobility Summit, in Shanghai, China from February 26 to 28.

Toshiba's cumulative production of HDD now stands at 200 million units since the company entered the business in 1967. Within that total, the company has produced 60 million 1.8-inch HDD since 2000. Building on these achievements, Toshiba will continue efforts to develop innovative products that meet market needs.

Outline of New Models

Background
Hard disk drives for mobile PCs must be small, light and able to withstand vibration and shock. While Toshiba's 1.8-inch drives are more robust than 2.5-inch HDD, they have not matched the larger drives in data transfer rates. However, the launch of new 1.8-inch drives that combine the use of the serial ATA interface with boosted rotational speed achieves high speed transfer rates. The new drives also run much more quietly than 2.5-inch HDD, close to silent, making the new products much more suited to mobile PC.

Toshiba will continue its efforts to develop and produce high performance 1.8-inch HDD that offer mobile PCs ever higher levels of performance.

Key Features of New Products

1. Serial ATA interface with high transfer rate
Adoption of the serial ATA interface takes data transfer speeds beyond that of the parallel ATA interface and achieves high performance specs for mobile PCs.

2. High rotational speed
The drives operate at a maximum rotation speed of 5,400 rpm, 29% faster than Toshiba's current 120GB 1.8-inch HDD (MK1214GAH), supporting much faster data transfers.

3. Compact and light
The new drives are compact and light compared to 2.5-inch HDD with the same formatted capacity, and optimized for mobile PC applications.

Compared to a 2.5-inch HDD with the same formatted capacity, the new drives offer the higher levels of vibration and shock resistance needed in mobile PCs.

Alongside capacity improvement, Toshiba has also achieved power consumption efficiency of 0.00375W/GB for the MK1216GSG, as defined in the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's Energy Conservation Law, assuring a more environmentally friendly design. The new drives also comply with the EU's RoHS directive.

Sony Strengthens the Line of "Intelligent" Multi-Codec Network Security Cameras

DEPA-enabled SNC-RX570 & RX-530 offer greater efficiency and higher sensitivity

Sony is expanding its line of third generation network security cameras with the new powerful high-end, SNC-RX570 and SNC-RX530, that support "Intelligent Video Analytics" and multi-codec capabilities. With the built-in intelligence and well-off features, the new network cameras are designed to address specific user requirements on various monitoring applications.

The SNC-RX570 and SNC-RX530 have a high-speed 360? endless panning or rotation capability, which allow users to precisely capture almost any object surrounding the camera. In addition, by employing a 1/4-type Exwave HAD CCD with the minimum illumination level of 1.4 lux at F1.6 for SNC-RX570 and 0.7 lux at F1.4 for SNC-RX530, the camera delivers exceptional picture quality for any monitoring application, even in low-light conditions.

Both multi-codec cameras supported the advanced compression technologies to transmit image data in three different formats: JPEG, MPEG-4 and H.264. SAPPHIRE HD 3870 Goes TOXIC!


SAPPHIRE HD 3870 TOXIC version features the award winning - and SAPPHIRE exclusive -Vapor-X single slot cooler, SAPPHIRE's implementation of Vapour Chamber Technology (VCT). This advanced cooling solution provides more efficient and quieter cooling allowing the TOXIC edition to ship overclocked out of the box, and to allow enthusiasts even more scope for performance tuning. The single slot design allows the use of multiple cards in the latest CrossFireX configurations even where PCI-Express slots are sited closely together.

Razer Mako 2.1 Speakers

The Mako Infusion

A few months back, we were introduced to the Razer Mako, a 2.1 speaker system featuring solid audio delivery and well-designed aesthetics. When we finally received a review unit, we found that there were more revelations lying in wait for us to discover.

The Dome Experience

Whilst un-boxing the Razer Mako, the first noticeable thing will be its substantial weight. Though both satellite speakers are of reasonable proportions, the same can't be said for the woofer, which is one heavy pod for its size. Still, its dome-shaped design gives the Mako a pleasing futuristic look.

Unlike conventional speakers, Razer utilizes propriety jacks akin to an Ethernet port for its satellite connections. Two output ports are available, with a 3.5mm audio jack from the woofer to the audio card output and a RCA port that allows you to utilize the Mako as a pseudo home theater system.

The Mako's touch sensitive control pod gains full access to the unit with the woofer acting as the main hub. Its control interface includes the following functions: the power button, indicated by the glowing Razer logo, a switch for Mute, Line 1, Line 2, Volume and Bass and lastly, a scroller that controls either Volume or Bass levels. Though some might find it similar to Logitech's Z10 interface, the Mako's control pod definitely isn't what the Z10 is. With the Mako, the need for a full contact point to operate the control pod places unnecessary hassle on the user, since more pressure is required to register an input.

Audible Magic

Coming to the test proper, we chose a few selected compressed audio tracks at 192kbps and 128kbps bitrates to determine audio fidelity. The Mako sounded a little underpowered with its 120Hz crossover frequency, and delivered average performance on bass levels through its 50W satellite speakers on Fatboy Slim's bass-heavy "Right Here, Right Now" track. Lower frequency ranges on the other hand were decent with minimal distortions at high volumes, and vocals were well defined at mid-range, as tested with "Hell Freezes Over" by Eagles on an XRCD2. On a gaming level, we took Petroglyph's "Universe At War" for a spin, and true to its purpose, the Mako delivered an impeccable audio experience surrounded with the game's mechanized voices and alien war machines.

Further tests were conducted to determine the audio quality based on its ClassHD digital amplifier technology, which is really a double-edged sword. By providing varying power on the amplifier based on its necessity, distortion is reduced drastically but tests on THX certified films such as "The Lion King 3" showed that there was a compromise in its loudness due to a limitation of its power delivery to the amplifier to lower distortion levels.

While conventional 2.1 speakers tend to send audio output in a single, narrow direction, we were impressed with the Mako's omni-directional satellite output. More importantly, the downward-firing design of the satellite speakers utilizes your desktop as an intermediate medium, which amplifies the audio waves and creates a virtual 360 degree experience.

The Last Movement

With a track record of producing state-of-the-art gaming peripherals, Razer's foray to excite gamers with its very own audio system for gaming purposes could provide stiff competition for its fellow rivals such as Bose's Companion 5 and Harmon Kadon's SoundSticks II. Priced at a hefty S$629.99, consumers should expect an above average 2.1 sound system, which is excellent for gaming, but not one that can yet replace your current home theater system.

14/01: Foxconn Shows Off Quad CrossFire Motherboard






Foxconn is showing off its impressive new Quad CrossFire motherboard at CES, which features no less than 10 slots - four PCI-E 16x, four PCI-E 1x and two standard PCI. The motherboard also has a watercooled northbridge and southbridge. I'll let the pictures say the rest.

14/01: NVIDIA GeForce 9600GT 512MB First Benchmarks




Expreview reports what we should expect from NVIDIA's GeForce 9 series first born in terms of performance. The card's clocks are 650/1625/1800MHz(core/shader/mem), using PCB design P545, GPU codename is "G94-300″, made by TSMC's 65nm process technology. The testbed: Intel Core 2 QX9650@3GHz, ASUS Maximus Formula ROG X38 DDR2, Geil 2x1GB DDR2-800 4-4-4-10-1T, Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit SP1 Beta V.668 using modded ForceWare 169.25WHQL drivers.

Alienware has the answer with this prototype curved widescreen display, which is essentially the size of two 24-inch widescreen monitors with a natural curved view. This baby is actually running on DLP projection and was running a Crysis demo at max resolution.

14/01: All new in A-DATA



A-DATA showing off updated solid state technologies in the form of lager 128GB 2.5-inch SSD SATA RAID storage. There is also a move towards the 1.8-inch drive market and SSD companies have begun moving in with larger drives. A-DATA's sample at CES came up to 32GB.





Besides the usual desktop SATA SSD models, high capacity solid state storage has been seen moving into other form factors. Here, we see 16GB ExpressCard SSD. All three models seen here seem to be identical specification-wise, though interestingly enough, the E704 comes with a USB dongle for connection.
CF cards are also getting capacity bumps, up from 16GB to 32GB on a single card.
This isn't a USB flash drive, but a eSATA one instead. A-DATA probably thought it would be interesting to debut a high-capacity (32GB) thumb drive that connects via speedy eSATA. However, if you look at the image properly, you'd notice that the drive itself comes with a split-cable dongle that has a USB connection on it. It would seem while the device looks like a normal thumb drive, it would require both eSATA and USB to make it work. Hopefully, this is just a prototype design oversight.
Not exactly the latest kid on the block, but still hard to beat. A-DATA recently upped the ante with a 2000MHz DDR3 memory module. These things run on 9-9-9-24 timings and super high 2.05-2.15 Volts.

14/01: Vaulter (8G, 12GB, 16GB) PCIe module


SSD capacities are too small and expensive, Windows ReadyBoost has too many variables and limited to Windows Vista, Intel's Turbo Memory didn't really work and now SanDisk is taking their shot at boosting HDD storage performance with their new Vaulter (8G, 12GB, 16GB) PCIe module. The theory is still the same, an external flash storage that sits between the system and HDD to act as cache. However, unlike Turbo Memory and ReadyBoost, Vaulter isn't just another cache, it tries to optimize data access between itself and the HDD - certain data types are stored on the Vaulter directly, while others are moved to the HDD. This way, you get to see SSD-like performance immediately without losing the huge capacities of traditional HDDs. One thing's for sure is that we can't wait to try this new gadget to see if it can offer notable improvements.

13/01: Apacer Launches 4GB DDR2-800MHz Memory Modules
